Shrimati Ji was created in 1968 by great Indian cartoonist Pran Kumar Sharma and published by Diamond Comics. Shrimati Ji (it is a word to address married Indian women respectfully) is shown as belonging to a middle class family having two kids. Due to the middle class connection people easily associate with her as majority of population belongs to this class. This cartoon series is published in Manorama, Punjab Kesari, and Sandhya Times etc. along with being published in magazine/newspapers comics of Shrimati Ji have also been compiled by Diamond Comics.
One of the most common themes in this short is that of spiraling price rise which is very relevant in today’s world of rising inflation. The couple, Kishore and Sheela, braves all sorts of situations with a smile on their face. As a normal house wife Sheela likes hosting kitty parties, shopping and visiting beauty parlour to look good.

DOGA

Doga is an Indian superhero created by Manish Gupta and published by Raj Comics. Doga first appeared in issue no 395 titled “Curfew”. Suraj is Doga’s alter-ego.Daku Halkan Singh (Daku means dacoit in Hindi), a cruel dacoit, finds a skinny Suraj as in a rubbish dump. When the dacoit found Suraj, he was a skinny infant. Halkan Singh adopts Suraj and treats him very badly and calls him dog. During his stay with Halkan, Doga became a sociopath after witnessing the cruel incidents and horrors that goes with the life of a dacoit.

Suraj’s life brightens up after Halkan abandons him and he meets Adrak Chacha and his brothers. Adrak owns a gym, called Lion Gym, where Doga starts his physical training by using weights. He builds his body by training in the gym while getting trained in martial arts by Haldi Khan (Adrak’s brother), in boxing by Dhania Khan (another brother of Adrack) and Kalimirchi Khan, youngest brother of Adrack, teaches him how to shoot and use explosives.

Killota, a former member of the gym, starts his own gym and a rivalry begins with Khan family. In an attack on the Khans by hired goons all the brothers are killed. Suraj seethes with rage and wants to revenge the death of people who gave him love and protection. To avenge the death of his friends and mentors, Suraj dons a dog mask and assumes an identity of Doga. He kills Killota’s gang but does not stop at that. He becomes vigilante by taking action against organized crime in the city of Mumbai. He also kills Daku Halkan who has now become a minister.

Doga’s real identity is known only to a few including Inspector Cheetah, who is now working as a private detective after retirement, and Cheetah’s sister Monica who is also his love interest. Doga has appeared with other Raj Comics heroes like Parmanu, Nagraj, Dhruva, Bheria, Shakti and Inspector Steel. Kal Pahelia is his main enemy who puts a puzzle in every crime he does. As Doga kills all his enemies the list is virtually non existent.

Doga has no super powers other than his ability to communicate with dogs who give him information. He uses his martial arts and his physical power, enhanced in the gym, in combat. He des not shy away from using an impressive arsenal of fire arms and explosives when needed.

Super Commando Dhruva is an Indian comic character created by Anupam Sinha and published by Raj Comics. His first appearance was in Issue No 74, “Pratishodh Ki Jwala”. In the first story itself that Dhruva’s parents have been murdered by a villain named Jubisco and Dhruva in his rage of fury vows to take revenge and ultimately avenges his parents’ death by killing Jubisco. “Dhruva” is a Sanskrit name which means the center or axis, and that center remains constant irrespective of things going around. Dhruva is shown as a handsome young guy having a well toned muscular body. Unlike other comic heroes he does not posses much superpower. The only special power he has is the ability to comprehend the language of birds and animals, which can be attributed to the fact that he was born and brought up in Jupiter Circus and spend a lot of time with animals. The animals and bird are his major allies as they constantly report the crimes which take place in the fictional city of “Raj Nagar” where Dhruva lives with his foster family.

He is proficient in all major types or martial arts and is good in hand to hand combat. He has great analytic power which helps him in looking for clues at a crime scene and following and nabbing villains. On a number of occasions it is shown that he triumphed over villains more powerful than him by using his wits. He can also breathe under water after his friend Dhananjay gifted him this ability. Dhruva has vowed not to kill anyone so he usually disarm or disable his enemies by using any object found close to him. In the stories he is paired with other heroes, he is always the one who comes with ideas to counter the villains using the powers of other heroes wisely.

To prevent crime in the fictional city of “Raj Nagar” he patrols every night on his special motor cycle. Dhruva never uses disguise and is shown as wearing a yellow and blue colored dress. He heads a small team founded by himself, called “Commando Force”, which helps him in fighting crime in “Raj Nagar”. The other members of the team are Karim, Peter, and Renu.

Shweta who is his foster-sister and a science student helps Dhruva with technical aspect of fighting crime. She has given him “Star Transmitter”, special boots which can become skates, and “Star Line” which is a rope which helps him in moving in the style of Batman. He also has “Star-Blades” which are blades in shapes of stars.

Dhruva is adopted by I.G. Rajan after murder of his parents. He lives with his foster parents in “Raj Nagar” and has Shweta as his foster sister. Shweta leads a life of double identity. In real life she is shown as a sweet girl with not much liking for adventures. But she has saved Dhruva’s life on many occasions under the disguise of “Chandika” (name of a Hindu goddess). Dhruva has no idea about the real identity of Chandika.

Dhruva has appeared in a number of comics along with Nagraj and the pair is very popular. His friends include Black Cat, Dhananjay, Vanputra, Samri, Lori and Commander Natasha who is also his love interest. Some of his main enemies are Grand Master Robo, Chumba, Mahamanv, Chandakaal, NastreDamus and Super Nova.

NAGRAJ

Nagraj, if literally translated, means “snake-king” or “king of snakes”. Nagraj is the mascot or flagship comic character of “Raj Comics”, a renowned Indian comic publishing house. Nagraj was created in late 1980’s by Sanjay Gupta and his first appearance was in “Issue No 14- Nagraj”.

In the first comic it is shown that Professor Nagmani created Nagraj as a weapon and a killing machine not to be used for any good purpose but to be sold to any terrorist in the world who bids highest for him. But, later comics suggest that his powers are not due to Prof. Nagmani. Queen Lalita and King Takshak Raj had been trying for a long time to have a son. By the blessings of “Dev Kaljayi”, the family deity of Nagraj, Queen Lalita was pregnant with Nagraj. Nagraj’s uncle Nagapasha tried to kill Queen Lalita by poisoning her with Dev Kaljayi’s venom. When King Takshak Raj requested the deity to somehow save the Queen she agreed after a lot of persuasion but said that the poison will have to be diverted to the unborn baby. Left with no choice the King agreed. When Nagraj was born, he appeared to be lifeless and hence he was floated in the river. It is an ancient custom that dead children are floated in the river than being burned. It is still a mystery that how did Nagraj survive after being poisoned with such a high concentration of venom. It is speculated that maybe Dev Kaljayi had a soft heart and decided to spare Nagraj’s life. In his initial years Nagraj stayed at the “Nagamani Dweep”. The place is an island of “Ichchadhari” snakes (snakes that can assume forms they want at different times). Nagraj somehow ends up in the captivity of Prof. Nagamani who experiments on Nagraj and feeds him snake poison to the point that Nagraj’s blood becomes poison. Prof. Nagamani does all this so that he can lease Nagraj to some international terrorist. Nagamani uses mind control methods on Nagraj. Nagraj is leased for $ 1 million dollar for his first mission, which is to recover an ancient statue. Nagraj is successful in doing that mission but then “Baba Goraknath” frees him from the control of Prof. Nagamani. After this, Nagraj vows to defeat the villains and terrorists of the world.

Nagraj has a number of powers, most of which come from the microscopic snakes residing in his blood. Nagraj has snakes living in his blood than having WBC (White Blood Cells). His breath as well as bite is poisonous enough to immediately kill a man. Just like Spiderman, he can shoot snakes off his wrist which can take shape of rope and other things depending on the situation Nagraj is in. the ropes can be used for swinging just like Spiderman does. Later it was revealed that his venom is more powerful than Potassium Cyanide and strong enough to melt a human body if he is bitten by Nagraj. Nagraj has hypnotic powers as well. He himself can transform into snake form any time on his own will. His healing powers are enhanced by the micro snakes residing in his body. He has “Jadoogar Shakoora” as his arch enemy along with Nagdant and Prof. Nagmani. Super Commando Dhruv, another fictional character of Raj Comics, is Nagraj’s friend and ally.
Nagraj never had any alter ego at the time of his creation. Later on Raj, who works with Bharti Communications as a Public Relation Officer is shown as the alter ego of Nagraj. Raj pretends to be terrified of snakes and leaves a very simple life. His alter ego bears a striking similarity to that of Clark Kent.

CHACHA CHAUDHARY

Chacha Chaudhary is one of the most famous Indian comic characters. He was created by Pran Kumar Sharma in 1969 though he first appeared in the Hindi comic magazine “LotPot” in 1971. His first comic was “Chacha Chaudhary and the Pocket Thief”. Chacha means uncle in Hindi. From then on he has come a long way selling almost ten million copies and being published in ten different Indian languages.

Chacha Chaudhary is portrayed as a middle class, old Indian. Physically he is not strong but his strength lies in his brain. He is always shown as holding a stick and wearing a red turban. His family includes his wife, Bini, more famously known simply as Chachi (Hindi for aunt). His companions include Rocket, who is a street dog and Sabu who is a giant from the planet Jupiter. Sabu decided to stay permanently on Earth after tasting delicious food made by Chachi’s hands. When need arises Sabu helps Chacha Ji with his physical strength. Chacha Chaudhary is remarkably different from other superheroes whether Indian or foreign that he does not have a single superpower to his credit except of course his mind about which it is said that “Chacha Ji’s brain is sharper than a needle and works faster than a supercomputer”. Chacha Ji has solved more than eighty cases till now, most of them involving supernatural or scientific threats. He has a red convertible as his car.

Raka who was a dacoit earlier but became immortal after drinking a magic potion and Gobar Singh are the main enemies of Chacha Chaudhary. Currently Diamond Comics are the publishers of Chacha Chaudhary. Even though he has immense fan following, Chacha Chaudhary series has drawn ire of some for its poor illustrations and incorrect English translations.

A television series based on Chacha Chaudhary was made casting Raghuvir Yadav in the lead role as Chacha Chaudhary. Praveen Kumar played the role of Sabu and Madhuri Sanjeev as Chachi. The series was produced by Maya Entertainment and was aired on Sahara Television in May 2002.
